So, to first start off, the Prince essentially outlines what a ruler needs to do in order to stay in power. Now Machiavelli living in Florence, Italy at the time sent this as a letter to the leader, Lorenzo de’Menchi who obtained power via a political struggle which was important as didn’t claim divine right put him there so his rule might be contented by the populace.

The core essence of this book lies the notion that men cannot be trusted, and that betrayal is an ever present danger. People in general will provide support in good times, but in the bad will turn against you. Too put this in another context, a ruler who aims to be morally good all the time will eventually be overthrown.

What Machiavelli suggests to those in this position is to possess political ingenuity (virtu)..which translated means the skills to adapt to any circumstance. Whether this means to live a dualistic state to do evil when necessary while also performing good.

Machiavelli also portrays the notion that fear trumps love as it goes deeper into the core of a human being.

It’s better to be merciful rather than cruel, but if we are too merciful then disorder will spread therefore a ruler must be ready to do evil for the sake of obedience & the solidification of his leadership.

Many people think of Machiavelli as a cynic for holding these ideologies, but he’s merely presenting these as a final resort when moral ruling doesn’t work. Nowhere in the book does he advocate a tyrannical, or authoritative ruling which becomes apparent if you read his text the “Discourses on Livy.”

What Machiavelli outlines in this text is the call for a movement towards a Republic where citizens can live a free live instead of a secure one. For a Republic to effectively run, it needs the citizens input as they are the bearers of freedom for their own lives.

This of course leads people to believe that there would conflict between citizens and government, but Machiavelli proposes that this elements of disagreement between rulers and citizen actually inspires better laws along with creativity.

Also, in a Republic, the citizens input their opinion via free will which collectively is wiser than a single ruler. Keep in mind though, without stability a Republic such as this will never happen. Machiavelli suggest that a ruler needs to act like two different beasts:
“The lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. One must therefore be a fox to recognize traps and a lion to frighten wolves.”
